Love is the spirit of this program. The music spans many genres but has unifying themes of justice, love, learning and hope. The messages come from podcasts, sermons and readings from Unitarian-Universalist and other allied sources in liberal religion. The title of this program comes from the words of a beloved Unitarian-Universalist hymn, “Spirit of Life,” including, “Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion” and “Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.”

Today is the birthday, in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1913, of civil rights activist Rosa Parks. Her refusal to give up her seat in a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 led to the Montgomery bus boycott, an important turning point in the Civil Rights movement. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said of her decision to act, “Eventually, the cup of endurance runs over and the human personality cries out, ‘I can take it no longer.’”
Wednesday is the birthday, in 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland, of abolitionist, orator and writer Frederick Douglas. He escaped from slavery and became a living counter-argument to those who argued that enslaved people lacked the intellectual capacity to function independently. In his later years, he embraced Unitarianism, critiqued orthodox Christian beliefs and called on the power of faith as a tool for social reconstruction.
Friday is the beginning of Carnival, series of a religious and cultural celebrations taking place around the world on the five-days before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a reflective period when many Christians will abstain from celebrations or eating certain foods ahead of Easter. These pre-Lenten celebrations have names, foods and traditions as varied as Christendom itself. The world’s largest carnival is in Rio de Janeiro.
Saturday marks the anniversary of the 1947 Supreme Court decision Emerson vs. Board of Education, which affirmed the Constitution’s sharp separation between the church and state. At issue was a New Jersey tax that aided private religious schools. While the court allowed the tax, it decisively ruled that a legal “wall of separation” between church and government must extend to state laws, many of which favored one religion over another.
