Most countries have had writers who speak eloquently and powerfully about their homeland, but South Africa has had many of them. In the past: Nadine Gordimer, Peter Abrahams, Alan Paton, Nelson Mandela, and Es’kia Maphelele. In the present: Athol Fugard, Zakes Mda, Mongane Wally Serote, and John Maxwell Coetzee.
