Literature From South Africa

Most countries have had writers who speak eloquently and powerfully about their homeland, but South Africa has had many of them. In the past: Nadine Gordimer, Peter Abrahams, Alan Paton, Nelson Mandela, and Es’kia Maphelele. In the present: Athol Fugard, Zakes Mda, Mongane Wally Serote, and John Maxwell Coetzee. What is it about this country that stimulates the outpouring of literature? This week, Leigh and P. T. discuss that with Neo Mabotja, and we discuss some poetry that tries to capture the feeling.
