“In a Grove”

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa

Japanese literature rarely registers here in the United States, but Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s story “In a Grove” is an exception. It has been included in several collections and has been the source for seven movies and an opera. The most famous film adaptation, of course, is Akira Kurosawa’s (1950) Rashomon. This week, Leigh and P. T. attempt to pick their way through the contradictory testimony in the investigation of a murder.
