Love is the spirit of this program. The music spans many genres but has unifying themes of justice, love, learning and hope. The messages come from podcasts, sermons and readings from Unitarian-Universalist and other allied sources in liberal religion. The title of this program comes from the words of a beloved Unitarian-Universalist hymn, “Spirit of Life,” including, “Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion” and “Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.”

Wednesday in Judaism is the beginning of Purim, a celebratory holiday remembering the saving of the Jewish people from an official, Haman, who was planning to kill all the Jews. The story is recounted in the Bible’s Book of Esther, the story’s heroine. Holiday traditions vary by ethnic and religious affiliation but might include giving gifts, wearing costumes, drinking wine and baking fruit-filled pastries called hamantashen or “Haman’s ears.”
Thursday in the Baha’i faith begins a nineteen day fast, called Nineteen Day Fast, one of the most important obligations in the Baha’i faith. From sunrise to sunset, with some exceptions, Baha’is observe the fast to reinvigorate the soul and bring the faithful closer to God. Similar to Lent, Ramadan or other religious fasts, the Nineteen Day Fast centers around spiritual reflection, behavioral readjustment and a symbolic shedding of selfish desires.
Friday in Hinduism is Holi, a spring festival also known as the Festival of Colors. Hindus link the holiday to various gods. However, it has become a secular kind of spring festival across the Indian subcontinent, with Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists also joining in. Holiday traditions include bonfires, drums, water gun fights and playfully smearing colored powder all over faces. Holiday foods include sweet saffron rice, fruit-filled pastries and fried lentil pockets.
Saturday in Catholic churches is the feast day for St. Katharine Drexel. Born on March 3rd, 1858 in Philadelphia, she was a wealthy heiress, philanthropist, religious sister and the first person born a U.S. citizen to be canonized. Pope John Paul the Second officially recognized her saintliness in the year 2000 for, among other things, her courage in addressing social inequality among minorities and her selfless service to victims of injustice.
