March 10, 2026: In Hindsight on Hindsight

In studio today, hosts Opollo, Louis and Barbara, inspired by the Hindsight Film Festival, discussed the documentaries we screened and our takeaways.  First, we talked about historical dates preceding the show–3/6/1836 Battle of the Alamo, 3/7/1965 Bloody Sunday march to Selma, and 3/8 International Women’s Day–and how they fit into the past and present, particularly with regard to the truth and lessons of hindsight.

Opollo’s incredible question at the conclusion of the festival on March 8 resonated with me:  How many people in these audiences knew the truths of the events featured in the documentaries? Clearly the most relevant was Coup 54, the true story of the overthrow of Iranian President Mosaddegh by the USA/CIA and UK/MI6, the consequences of which led to the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the USA/Israel invasion that we are living with in the present.  Would knowing the truth about 1954 have led to a different outcome in 2026?

Opollo’s question took on great meaning as we discussed Coup 54 and many of the other documentaries, and we talked about how a more truthful history of the USA and the world might result in different decisions in the present and, if so, how does re-education happen.  Can our voices of re-education on Voices of Resistance make a difference in this re-education?

There will be no show next week due to the takeover of the streets and the route to WRUU by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and revellers.  I leave you with the words of Albert Strickland:  St. Patrick did not drive the snakes out of Ireland.  He was the snake.”

Coming up in the community:  Yamacraw Village, 3/22, 1 pm, Ships of the Sea; 4/4:  Earth Day; 5/1 May Day.  More to come.  Join us live on March 24.
