Contemporary Classics is featuring music by composers who will have their music performed at the Birmingham Art Music Alliance’s New Music Festival in Birmingham Alabama from October 18-21. The Festival features compositions for electronic music, electronic music with instruments and pure instrumental music by both composers who are members of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and from the New York Composers Circle. 10/16/2018
Tue. 8 pm. This week on Contemporary Classics I continue to celebrate the music of Leonard Bernstein with my third show this year honoring the centenary of Bernstein’s birth. This week we have his Jeremiah, Symphony No. 1; Chichester Psalms for Chorus and Orchestra; Sonata for Clarinet and Piano; Missa brevis, Divertimento; La Bonne Cuisine (Four Recipes); and as many of the dance episodes from the Fancy Free Ballet that we can squeeze in. 10/02/2018
Tue. 8 pm. On Contemporary Classics, Dave Lake interviews British composer Oliver Leith and will be talking about two of his works “Dream Horse” and “Pushing My Thumb Through a Plate”. This is the second episode also featuring music from ballet dance companies being active during that time. Music from Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Henri Sauguet and Francis Poulenc. 09/11/2018
Contemporary Classics on Tuesday night will be devoted to the music of George Walker who died this past week. He was the first black composer to receive the Pulitzer Prize for music with his work “Lilacs”. 09/04/2018

We will be focusing on his work String Quartet #1 “Vespers”. In addition we will be having music by composers who were part of his training Peter Boyer and Edward David Zeliff.
