Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It had been many years and much struggle before the “King-holiday bill” was signed into law, and in 1986 (and even today) not every state was yet on board. MLK Day, as we now know it, was the first federal holiday to honor a private citizen and an African American one at that.
