Fri. 12:06 pm ET-…this is an ill-conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies.” In 2016, the Nobel committee awarded the prize for literature to Bob Dylan. Not everyone applauded the award. Many of the disenchanted were themselves writers. Where does poetry end and lyrics begin? Is it merely the presence or absence of music? This week, Leigh Rich and P.T. Bridgeport will discuss the difference, with the help of resident musicologist Brian Renner. The 1960’s and 70’s saw the rise of rich, poignant lyrics from a host of sources – Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and John Lennon, among many others. At the same time, poetry seemed to lose its way. Do the major poets of that era really include musicians? The Nobel Committee seems to think so. Brian, Leigh, and P.T. will try to work it on out. Join us this week at 12:06 pm. 04/26/2019
Fri. 11 am ET-You see, she was gonna be an actress And I was gonna learn how to fly She took off to find the footlights And I took off to find the sky Sometimes, songs can transport us with their music and lyrics, but even more unusually, it can tell us stories that move us. This week Brian Renner and P.T. Bridgeport play some songs that tell a story – tall tales, winsome laments, and odd little moments that define us as human beings. Music from Louis Jordan, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and yes, Harry Chapin, among others. Our guest playlist executive this week was Catherine Renner, who came up with a really interesting set.
